‘The project fired me up, I wanted to respond creatively to the Financial Times article, not only because of my own subjective responses, but through hearing and acknowledging the voices of others. Those who lived and worked in Blackpool held an insider view of ‘our’ seaside town and had ambitions and hope that something better was/is just on the horizon. If it wasn’t, we could, as always embrace the storm and get on with trying to improve our lives and the lives of others.I wanted to make work that would incorporate that despite all of the negative statistics and reporting on our northern seaside town, there was something still ‘golden’ going on. Left Behind is LeftCoast’s programme of work in response to an article published in the Financial Times in November 2017 highlighting the forgotten towns on the fringes of Britain. Five artists were commissioned to develop new work in a creative response to this article. LeftCoast is an independent arts organisation in Blackpool and Wyre that brings people together to change the way we feel about our world. It is an Arts Council Creative People and Places project and is supported by a consortium of local partner organisations.
